Lakes and Rivers of the Julian Alps

10-Day Tour; start from Bohinj (pick-up in Ljubljana, Bled or Bohinj)

Immerse yourself in a 10-day adventure in some of the loveliest mountains and villages that crown beautiful Slovenia. The Julian Alps deserve their reputation: from Alpine lakes, colorful wild flowers, turquoise rivers and tall waterfalls, to sheer walls, tall peaks and beautiful wildlife. We will spend most of our time in the mountainous landscape of the Triglav National Park, one of our favorite mountain areas to hike, while being pampered with traditional cuisine. The tour is a perfect combination of the mainstream must-do hiking destinations in Slovenia and the refreshing off-the beaten-track mountainous world.

To recap the 10 days: From Lake Bohinj, we will head towards the lakes, spend two nights in the very heart of the Triglav National Park, and from there descend to the gorgeous Soča Valley. The following day we will explore the emerald Soča, a world-known river which feels almost surreal with its mesmerizing hue, crystalline pools and coves between rapids. From there, we will traverse back to Lake Bohinj right on the WWI-history-packed trails amid imposing peaks, and rest our legs, the next day exploring the flatter Krma Valley, a spectacular valley surrounded by rocky walls of high mountains. In the following days we will enter the mountainous kingdom of the rare Alpine ibex, explore more Alpine lakes, conquer a tall peak, and conclude our wonderful tour with the views of the 3-km wide and 1-km tall Triglav North Face and a farewell dinner in one of the boutique restaurants in the Alps.

Hiking in Slovenia: The Gear You Will Need

Itinerary

Days 1 - 3 | Lake Bohinj – Triglav Lakes – Soča Valley

We meet at Lake Bohinj and hike right from above the lake into the heart of the Triglav National Park past waterfalls, forests, alpine meadows, villages, and lakes. Our first walk will take us along a beautiful gorge up a mountain river Mostnica to a crashing 20-meter waterfall. From there we will continue our way up until we reach two gorgeous alpine villages with traditional wooden houses and views of the Alps. We will spend our first night in a cozy hut by a lake at Planina pri Jezeru. The following day we will head further into the park, visiting most of the seven Triglav Lakes, and spend another night in the mountains at the highest lying Triglav lakes. On the third day we take our last look towards Triglav and its lakes and descend to the other side of the Julian Alps to Trenta in the Upper Soča Valley, where we will also spend the night in a comfortable hotel.

Day 4 | Soča Valley

A marvelous day of hiking along the otherworldly Soča River, famous for its crystal clear emerald green water, and visiting small towns, and a WWI museum. We will spend the night in Kobarid, Caporetto in Italian, an enchanting little town at the foothills of Mt. Krn also known for the last battle of the bloody Isonzo Front, when the opposing Italian army finally withdrew from the Slovenian territory after two long years.

Days 5 - 6 | Kobarid – Lake Krn – Lake Bohinj

The next day’s big hike will take us through forests and more dreamy alpine villages across spectacular mountains all the way to yet another lake – Lake Krn, where we will spend the night in a hut. On the sixth day, we will hike from Lake Krn across a mountain pass back to Lake Bohinj, where our adventure started five days before. We will transfer to Mojstrana, where we will spend the next two nights.

Day 7 | Mojstrana – Krma Valley

The following day we will have a beautiful hike in the Krma Valley surrounded by an impressive amphitheater of high mountains and almost vertical walls.

Days 8 - 9| Peričnik Waterfall – Kriški Podi – Kranjska Gora

Our last two-day mountain adventure in the Julian Alps will take us from the gorgeous Vrata Valley, the neighboring valley to the Krma Valley from the day before, first to the gushing 52-meter tall Lower Peričnik Fall and the 16-meter  tall Upper Peričnik Fall, and then to the beautiful kingdom of the Alpine ibex. We will spend the night in the Pogačnik hut in the midst of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. The next day we will conquer a 2,410-meter mountain Križ, and then descend all the way down to “civilization” / the town of Kranjska Gora, where we will spend our last night.
