A family outdoor weekend in Kranjska Gora

IN Family , Outdoor blog

There is no such thing as a perfect family weekend, yet picking the right setting can play a crucial role in either surviving the weekend or truly enjoying yourselves. After two pathetic weeks of exchanging places in our rehabilitation bed drinking hot tea and inhaling anything that supposedly sped up our recovery, we were all anxious to get outside and just start enjoying life again. We booked an apartment for the weekend in Kranjska Gora, a small sunny town in the midst of outdoor paradise, as there would be activities for everyone. As it turned out, the place was awesome, while its countless sports options fitted the whole family.

When you seek a relaxing workout only to find perfection: Šmarna Gora for sunrise

IN Hiking blog , sunrise hiking , training

I have a confession to make. I don’t do CrossFit, Zumba, fitness, cardio boxing, boot camp, anything of the kind actually. My usual workout begins right there under a lonely hill to the north of Ljubljana. With its 366 m of elevation, Šmarna Gora is everything I need to stay in shape. The best time to go? Definitely morning.

Two climbers on the way to Triglav, Slovenia.

Triglav anyone?

IN Adventure , Climbing blog , Winter

I’ve written about climbing our highest peak over and over and over again. It’s strikingly beautiful and climbing it fills you with indescribable emotions way beyond exhilarated. But then again, Triglav is surprisingly demanding and even in perfect conditions a serious ascent. Experienced climbers describe winter ascents to Slovenia’s highest peak as a true challenge. You want to do it safely? Climb it with a mountain guide. Seriously.

Debela peč awaited right in front of us.

Mountains in December are just awesome: Debela peč

IN Adventure , Hiking blog , Julian Alps

I happen to have the best friends in the whole world. Remember Barbara from Triglav? She has been a good friend since high school and as it happens with friends, we’ve evolved in quite the same direction. If we started off sharing a glass of wine on Friday nights in our teen years, we now share a much greater passion for mountains (honestly, it was a bottle rather than a single glass). To that extent, she offered to share her last week’s trip to the Triglav National Park conquering a beautiful mountain called Debela peč. Here it is folks, Barbara’s very first blog post and shall I say, hopefully, there will be many more of those in the future.

Love for mountains

IN Family hiking , Outdoor blog

It’s the connection we have with nature and mountains, wandering steps into the unknown, budding flowers at the foothills, drifting clouds over towering peaks, huge expanses to rest your gaze upon. It’s a way of life.

If it seems they were in a hurry – they actually were… in a hurry to find more snow and start a snow fight 🙂

Training mountain trail near Ljubljana? Visit Bašeljski Vrh

IN Hiking blog , Hiking near Ljubljana , Kamnik-Savinja Alps , Trail running

Both a demanding and picturesque mountain trail not too far from Ljubljana which you could actually squeeze into an average hectic workday? I’m talking about a 10-km trail with 1,144 m elevation gain (and drop) that’s technically easily accessible all year round and starts just 33 km from Slovenia’s capital. It’s called Bašeljski Vrh.

A green whip snake curled around a helpless mouse giving it a final look. At the top of Punta La Marmora, the highest summit of Sardinia, Italy.

Hiking Punta La Marmora or the time a snake caught a mouse

IN Adventure , Family hiking , Hiking blog

Being an active family with a special thing for the mountains, it was no longer than the third day on Sardinia that we set off towards the mountainous region Gennargentu and the highest peak of the island, Punta La Marmora. After a 3-hour drive on curvy roads with unnerved kids on the verge of throwing up, we arrived at the trailhead all wearing the “it better be worth it!” attitude. As it turned out, hiking Punta La Marmora has a lot to offer and easily qualifies as the best trip we made in Sardinia. Yes, it was well worth it to say the least.

Triglav: finally getting it right

IN Climbing blog , Hiking

There’d been several attempts this year to conquer it, but failed (remember Ski touring below the Triglav North Face, Climbing Triglav in spring and The third try?). Not by much; yet still standing at the top of the second of the two highest peaks doesn’t quite measure up to that sweet feeling of actually reaching the summit, does it? A fourth attempt based on a spontaneous idea from a day before surprisingly succeeded. Not only succeeded, but it excelled so greatly it can be easily placed on my top five hikes of all times!

Backcountry cycling on Parenzana

IN Cycling , Outdoor blog

It’s been exactly a year since my first time cycling Parenzana. Last September my husband and I got a tip from a friend about the 123 km (76.5 miles) ex-railroad, now a regulated cycling path, connecting Trieste with Poreč, and decided to give it a try. After a romantic weekend cycling in the midst of unspoiled Istrian nature, eating truffles and freshly picked grapes, we both agreed to turn this trip into a yearly thing.
