Hiking among Alpine Pastures of Pokljuka

Visoki Mavrinc, a gorgeous and safe peak above Kranjska Gora

Itinerary

Day 1 | Bled – Pokljuka

Pick-up in Bled and transfer to Pokljuka. Set against a playground of high peaks of the Julians Alps and yet so snugly hidden in the otherwise thick forest, Pokljuka’s Alpine pastures offer perfect winter hiking goals with breathtaking views of the winter wonderland. We do our first showshoeing trip to an enchanting alpine pasture Zajamniki, truly one of the most romantic Alpine meadows in Slovenia.

Accommodation and restaurant in Pokljuka.

Day 2 | Pokljuka

We head for a longer loop hike to two Alpine pastures. First we visit an idyllic, remote and wild pasture at 1,440 m, surrounded with an amphitheater of high peaks of the Julian Alps. From there we follow a beautiful mountain stream, which weaves through a fluffy white landscape between snow-capped rocks and white fir trees, and head towards the second pasture of the day. First mentioned in the 15th century, this pasture used to be a place for dairy farming in summer. In the 19th century it also became a resting point on the way to Triglav, while in the 20th century Alpine tourism started to develop, which continues even today.

Day 3 | Pokljuka - a peak in the Julian Alps

We tackle a mountain peak today! After we strap on our showshoes, we head towards the high peaks of the Julian Alps. On our way to a peak we pass yet another beautiful alpine pasture as we already eye our peak of the day. The hike is long but utterly rewarding as it offers incredible views of Triglav and other peaks of the Julian Alps!

Day 4 | Pokljuka - Bohinj

After the long previous day we deserve an easier but no less amazing hike towards Bohinj. We slowly descend down the forested mountains into the Voje Valley, walk along the Mostnica Gorge, where an Alpine river that comes bustling down the Bohinj mountains, has created a display of smaller waterfalls, pools of crystal-clear water and rapids. We finish the hike right at the Lake Bohinj, the biggest permanent lake in Slovenia.

Day 5 | Julian Alps above Bohinj

We enjoy ourselves as we showshoe in the mountains above the biggest permanent lake of Slovenia gasping at the views of the lake and the surrounding peaks.

Days 6 | Julian Alps above Bohinj

On our sixth day we showshoe to a cute mountain hut perched high above Lake Bohinj and explore the winter fairytale with a proper mountain lunch with stellar views. In the afternoon we transfer to the lively Alpine town of Kranjska Gora where we'll spend two more days.

Accommodation in Kranjska Gora.

Days 7 | Kranjska Gora

We head towards an amphitheater of high mountains directly from our hotel in Kranjska Gora. We tackle a loop hike in the Krnica Valley and ascend to an incredibly scenic peak of Visoki Mavrinc!

Accommodation in Kranjska Gora.

Days 8 | Kranjska Gora - Srednji Vrh

Before we part, we do yet another enchanting hike above Gozd Martuljek. We start the hike in Srednji Vrh, a small village at 950 m where 28 inhabitants still lead a genuine countryside life, and the mountains above, and head to a mid-elevation peak in the sun-stroked Karavanke Alps. We look over Špik, Škrlatica and other amazing peaks across the Zgornja Savinjska Valley as we showshoe to the top of an incredibly scenic peak. A farewell lunch and we are back in Bled greeting each other until next time.
