Hiking in Slovenia: The Gear You Will Need

Secret gems of the Soča Valley

Where to hike around the Soča Valley

Itinerary

Days 1 | Kranjska Gora – Vršič Pass – Trenta Valley

We meet in Kranjska Gora for a transfer over to the Soča Valley. But before we reach the picturesque valley we stop at the Vršič Pass for our first adventure in the mountains! We climb a peak with a view of the surrounding mountains and the valley where our next adventures will take place. The type of climb varies according to the experience of the group - it can be anything from an easy hike to a demanding but secured mountain climb. After the climb, we transfer down the scenic Vršič road to the Trenta Valley where we settle in a comfortable inn. In the afternoon we hike to see the source of the Soča River and the bravest will climb a short wall to reach the rocks where it surfaces already in its glorious turquoise colors.

Accommodation and restaurant in Trenta.

Day 2-3 | The Julian Alps above Trenta

Our biggest mountain adventure begins on the second day! We head towards high mountains above Trenta, where we’ll climb a couple of peaks and even spend a night in a cozy hut. The area is well-known for abundant wildlife like chamois and Alpine ibexes as well as rare fauna like the edelweiss flower.

On the first day we hike from Trenta along old military trails from the WWI to see three gorgeous Alpine lakes, reach one of the most scenic mountain huts in Slovenia, climb a peak in the afternoon, and enjoy a relaxing evening in the hut. After breakfast on the second day we tackle another peak offering incredible views of Mt. Triglav, the highest mountain of Slovenia, and its 3-km wide and 1-km high vertical North Face. We descend down a grassy and more comfortable side of the mountain, and hike our favored trail along flowering slopes and later a crystal-clear river to loop back down to Trenta.

Accommodation in a mountain hut (day 2) and Trenta (day 3).

Days 4| Soča Valley - Soča River

On the fourth day we explore the beautiful Soča Valley, its fabulous emerald green river, its gorges and waterfalls. We visit all the must-see natural attractions of the valley and also treat ourselves to a delicious picnic right beside the river.

Accommodation and restaurant in Kobarid.

Day 5 | The Julian Alps above Kobarid

We head again to the mountains above the valley but this time we explore the beautiful trails above Kobarid. Starting the hike on a meadow at 1,000 m we wander across flower speckled slopes with grazing cows up to a deep green lake, one of the three Krn Lakes. From there, we follow the trails that continue to Mt. Krn, the highest mountain of the Krn Mountains in the southwestern Julian Alps, and then loop back down to the meadow.

Accommodation and restaurant in Kobarid.

Days 6| Kobarid Waterfalls – Kranjska Gora

On our sixth day we hit the trail to explore three nicely hidden waterfalls just ten minutes outside Kobarid. It’s an adventure to reach them and we even have to pull ourselves up a rope on a pretty raw and exposed trail. After a picnic lunch at the last waterfall we slowly say goodbye to the wonderful Soča Valley, hug for the last time and transfer back to Kranjska Gora.

Transfer back to Kranjska Gora or Bled.
