Nestled in the heart of Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s largest protected area spanning 838 square kilometers, lies a realm of peaceful isolation, where the crowds are few but the hikes are nothing short of spectacular. Towering at nearly 2,000 meters, these majestic peaks stand just across from Mt. Triglav, separated by a narrow, glacial valley more than 1,000 meters deep. The vistas from this lofty vantage point are nothing short of awe-inspiring. Surprisingly accessible, with only 650 meters of ascent and a welcoming hut open year-round along the way, these mountains are within reach of nearly every hiker, regardless of the season or conditions. It’s a hike that combines stunning beauty with a rewarding sense of solitude, making it a true gem of the Julian Alps.

Itinerary

We park by one of the many alpine plateaus of Pokljuka, and start ascending slowly along an enchanting forest trail. While the trail treats us to an occasional glimpse of what's waiting ahead still in the forest, the truly mesmerizing views open up when breaking the tree line not too far from a hut where we'll enjoy a traditional mountain lunch. From there, we continue up an easy trail to gorgeous alpine meadows at the top of a scenic peak. After feasting on soul-stirring vistas of Mt. Triglav, Rjavina and other spectacular peaks of the Julian Alps, we continue our hike on an open trail that weaves across an idyllic mountainous world to a neighboring peak before returning back down a different route, walking through a beautiful larch forest.

"This is definitely one of the most panoramic peaks in the Julian Alps! The trail gently climbed through a tall spruce forest until we reached a hut where my 70-year-old mom sat in the shade and waited while we continued to hike up to the peak. We saw many beautiful flowers along the trail and when we arrived at the top the views simply took my breath away! We ate tasty sandwiches while resting and enjoying the views. All in all, it was an amazing day and I highly recommend the hike!"

T1 | No previous hiking or climbing experience is necessary. Surfaces: rolling or mountainous terrain with typically easily ascending trails, some steep ascents/descents and uneven trails.
