Nestled in the heart of Slovenia, Velika Planina stands as one of the country’s premier hiking destinations, a vast alpine plateau crisscrossed by easy trails that wind through expansive meadows, charming mountain villages, and remote farmsteads. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snowshoeing paradise, while spring breathes new life into the plateau, as vibrant carpets of crocuses stretch across the fields. Yet, it is summer that offers perhaps the most captivating experience. During this time, an ancient herdsmen settlement springs back to life, providing a rare glimpse into the timeless rhythms of local alpine culture. Velika Planina is not just a hike—it is a journey through the heart of Slovenia’s natural and cultural heritage.

Itinerary
Since Velika Planina is a large plateau, recognised for its scenery, flora and unique arcihtecture, and we'd like to get a glimpse of everything, we'll do a nice 11-km loop hike with 350 m of ascent around it. We'll start with an easy hike towards the herdsmen's settlement of Gojška and Mala Planina, enjoying the breathtaking views on the way. The cottages on Velika Planina are known for their unique architecture, while the settlement turns most interesting in June, when herdsmen resettle their cottages, giving an insight into the old ways of herding. After Mala Planina, we continue to walk in pristine nature towards the herdsmen's settlement Velika Planina where we can stop for a taste of homemade dairy products and other traditional goodies. From there we continue to Gradišče, the top of Velika Planina, getting amazing views of the jagged mountain peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. We return on a different trail across meadows and through forests.
